미국 국무부는 북한과 다양한 수단을 통해 수시로 대화하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 추가 회담 가능성과 관련해선 아직 발표할 것이 없다고 전했습니다. 이조은 기자가 보도합니다.

미국은 북한과 거의 매일 대화하고 있다고 국무부가 밝혔습니다.

[녹취:노어트 대변인] “I can tell you we continue to have conversations, virtually, every day, every other day or so, with the North Koreans, and when I say conversations, that can be by phone, that can be by message, that can be by email. Those are, they take different forms of those conversations. So we continue to have conversations with the government. When, if and when we have travel announcements to make, I will certainly let you know, but we have nothing yet.”

헤더 노어트 국무부 대변인은 9일 정례브리핑에서 북한과의 추가 회담 가능성에 대해 아직은 발표할 내용이 없다면서도, 전화와 메시지, 이메일과 같은 다양한 방식으로 북한 정부와 거의 매일 혹은 하루 걸러서 대화하고 있다고 말했습니다.

그러면서 발표할 추가 회담이나 방북 일정이 생길 때 알려주겠다며 현재로선 발표할 것이 없다고 덧붙였습니다.

트럼프 대통령이 최근 김정은 국무위원장에게 전달한 서한에서 추가 회담을 제안했냐는 질문에는 갖고 있는 정보가 없다며 서한에 실제로 무슨 내용이 담겼는지 또는 백악관이 (북한과) 어떤 대화를 하고 있는지 전혀 알지 못한다고 말했습니다.

[녹취:노어트 대변인] “I don’t have any information for you on that. This was a letter from the President to Chairman Kim, so I don’t have any visibility on what was actually in that letter or what conversation the White House may or may not be having, I will have to refer you to the White House for anything on that.”

앞서 볼튼 보좌관은 지난 7일 폭스뉴스와의 인터뷰에서 “마이크 폼페오 국무장관이 다시 북한을 방문해 김정은을 만날 준비가 돼 있다”고 밝힌 바 있습니다. 또 최근 김정은 국무위원장에게 전달한 서한을 통해 이런 만남을 제안했다며, 트럼프 대통령도 (김정은 위원장과) 언제든 만날 준비가 돼 있다고 말했습니다.

노어트 대변인은 북한산 석탄의 한국 반입과 관련해선 한국 정부와 훌륭한 관계를 갖고 있고 한국이 이 사안을 조사 중인 것으로 안다고 말했습니다.

[녹취:노어트 대변인] “We have a great relationship with the government of South Korea. My understanding is that they are looking into reports of this. We encourage all countries to maintain sanctions and to not skirt sanctions and make sure that sanctions are here ?…”

그러면서 모든 국가들이 제재를 유지하고 회피하지 않으며 제재가 유지되도록 분명히 할 것을 촉구했습니다.

또한 한국 정부는 미국의 동맹이자 오랜 파트너임을 거듭 강조했습니다.

[녹취:노어트 대변인] “The government of the Republic of Korea is an ally and a long standing partner of ours, and we closely coordinate with that government.”

이어 북한산 석탄 반입에 관한 수사를 시작할 것이라는 한국 정부의 말을 신뢰한다며, 미국은 한국 정부와 긴밀히 공조한다고 덧붙였습니다.

[녹취:노어트 대변인] “We trust when they say that they will investigate that they will investigate. We closely coordinate with them. They’ve been long standing allies and partners. So we have a strong relations with them.”

아울러 북한산 석탄 반입으로 대북제재 위반 혐의가 있는 한국 기업에 미국이 세컨더리 제재를 부과할 것이냐는 질문에, 이번 수사는 한국 정부에 의해 착수된 것이고 미국은 한국 정부로부터 관련 발표를 듣길 기다릴 것이라며 즉답을 피했습니다.
